Tsunami Blog:

Tsunami comes from the word 津波 (Okina minato no nami) which means big harbour wave in Japanese.
on March 11th 2011 a tsunami hit the north coast of Japan after an earthquake 9.0 on the richtor scale had happened a short while before. the tsunami took many lives and also hit a power plant which had a level 7 meltdown due to the tsunami, this was devastating because it made the water radioactive and highly dangerous.
over 210,000 people lost their home and still live in poverty today. The total damage is around 300 billion dollars.
there was little to no warning before it hit Japan and not many people got the news to evacuate.
the earthquake started at 2:46 and was 15 kilometres below the ground. it also lasted about 6 minutes.
the plates that caused it moved over 160 feet which is incredible.
because japan has such advanced technology they got a warning sent to their phones telling them that a earthquake had recently happened.
15,000 people were killed and some more were missing
. lots of waves were over 120 feet and some travelled inland up to 10 kilometres.
The tsunami killed 100,000 nesting bird too near Antarctica which really decreased the number of birds in their area.

As you can see there is a ship washed up from the sea during the tsunami. there is also lots of rubble from peoples destroyed houses.

What is a tsunami?

A tsunami is a big wave which can bring devastating effects. it can be caused from either giant earthquakes or eruptions of a volcano. There are lots of fault lines around the world, here is a map of them:

These fault lines are ready and at any time can make an earthquake happen, this leads to unexpected tsunami's which leave homes in ruins and also cost billions to repair that the government have to pay.
